# Set tone of voice

### TL;DR

Tone of voice controls how the assistant phrases its answers — from precise and business-formal to brief and direct. The choice applies to your whole organization.

### When to use this

Use this page when the default tone does not match your product's style or your users' expectations. For example, a technical analytics team may prefer a detailed, precise tone, while an end-user-facing product may benefit from a friendlier, more approachable style.

### Who can change this

Changing the tone of voice requires the **organization update** permission, which **member**, **admin**, and **owner** roles have. Users with the **explorer** role cannot change it.

This setting is available on plans that include AI customization. If the section is locked, contact your account manager.

### How to set tone of voice

1. Open **Settings** and select **AI behavior** in the left sidebar.
2. In the **Tone of voice** card, select one of the available options.
3. Click **Save**. A confirmation ("Context updated") appears once the change is applied.

### Available tones

| Tone                        | How the assistant responds                                                                                |
| --------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Default**                 | Toucan's standard tone — balanced and neutral.                                                            |
| **Professional**            | Business-appropriate, precise, and structured. Prioritizes clarity over casualness.                       |
| **Friendly & approachable** | Warm and encouraging. Makes data accessible and avoids jargon when possible.                              |
| **Concise & direct**        | Brief and to the point. Leads with the key insight, skips preamble, favors bullet points.                 |
| **Technical & detailed**    | Precise language suited for domain experts. Includes methodology details, caveats, and confidence levels. |

### Good to know

* **Scope**: the tone applies to every AI interaction in your organization, including the main chat, dashboard editor, and embedded experiences.
* **Reset**: select **Default** and save to return to Toucan's standard tone.
