# Getting started with a Crew (/crew/getting-started)



Your Crew starts out knowing nothing about your business. During the first month, your contact is your Toucan expert: they take your requests, build your first data app with the Crew on your real data, and train the Crew on your business along the way. Not everything is connected on day 1: connecting it is part of the project.

Our commitment: at the end of the month, your data app is in production and your Crew works on its own, at the level of autonomy you want.

## The first month [#the-first-month]

1. **Day 1: you open your data.** You give read-only access to the sources the project needs. Toucan AI never writes to your databases.
2. **Within 48 hours: a first result.** A first version on your real data, not a mockup, validated by your Toucan expert. You say what looks off.
3. **During the month: the Crew learns your rules.** Your business definitions and metrics are written down once and validated with you. A rule you state once applies everywhere, and you can read and correct what the Crew has learned.
4. **End of the month: acceptance and requests.** Your teams try the data app, then it opens to everyone. From then on, you make your requests to your Crew in Toucan AI. Your Toucan expert follows every request and validates every release.

## What we need from you [#what-we-need-from-you]

* **Read-only access to your data.** A read-only connection to the sources in the project's scope, for example a service account. See [Connection concepts](/core/build/data-connections/connection-concepts) for what Toucan AI does with a connection, and [Supported databases](/core/build/data-connections/supported-databases) for network allow-listing.
* **One point person, about an hour a week.** Someone from the business who knows what the app is for, answers your Toucan expert's questions, and validates the metrics and the previews.
* **Someone from your IT or data team** to open the read-only access to your sources.
* **Who your users are, and what each of them may see.** Your Toucan AI Crew uses it to set each user's access rights, so that everyone only sees their own numbers.

## When the first month ends [#when-the-first-month-ends]

Once your teams have accepted the data app and it is open to everyone, you move to [iterations](/crew/iterations): you make your requests in Toucan AI, for your data apps and beyond, and approve the changes as your needs evolve.
